Berlin is a large vibrant city with no single city centre, owing to its Cold War past and distinct quarters. Take advantage of the excellent S- and U-bahn train lines and bus network to get from place to place. From Alexanderplatz as a starting point in the east, worth a visit nearby are Checkpoint Charlie, near which the Berlin Wall once stood, Museum Island, and the newly designed Reichstag and government quarter. Nearby is Brandenburg Gate, heading west of which are the large Tiergarten Park and Zoo Garden. For antiques visit Charlottenburg, high-fashion shopping aficionados can head for the long Ku-damm Avenue, whereas for bars and nightlife all of Berlin is at your disposal.
